YANG Cheng 楊誠

YANG Cheng (b. 1989, Taiwan) is a Berlin-based composer, experimental sound performer and user experience designer. His work explores the concealed questions within existing answers, composing listening decisions where sound also chooses to listen back.

His practice encompasses electroacoustic improvisation, multi-channel sound installation and experimental music composition. His sonic articulation forms from gravity objects, field recordings, feedback noises, analog radio, bluetooth speaker and electromagnetic fields.

Ü

2022 OutsideininsideoutinsideoutoutsideiN reunion
Studio Alta, Prague, Czech Republic

Metal, 2 Contact microphone , Twin2.0 bluetooth speaker, sound mixer.
“Ü” is a sound performance in which noise is steered by hand, drifting between front and back speaker placement, left and right movement control, inside a narrow corridor.

Feedback is generated using two Bluetooth speakers held in my left and right hands, interacting with a contact microphone attached to a metal plate. Two loudspeakers are placed at the front and back of a long, narrow corridor.

The work takes place in the corridor of Studio Alta, where sound is projected vertically through the space. Vibrations captured by the contact microphones are fed back into the system, turning it into an inside-out instrument where output becomes input. Sound produced on the left travels from front to back and re-emerges on the right.

The performance unfolds as an improvisational exploration of directional spatial sound, micro physical touch, material acoustics, and the feedback path itself. Each contact point and distance alters the system, moving between density and reduction, complexity and a single decision.
