YANG Cheng 楊誠

YANG Cheng (b. 1989, Taiwan) is a Berlin-based composer, experimental sound performer and user experience designer. His work explores the concealed questions within existing answers, composing listening decisions where sound also chooses to listen back.

His practice encompasses electroacoustic improvisation, multi-channel sound installation and experimental music composition. His sonic articulation forms from gravity objects, field recordings, feedback noises, analog radio, bluetooth speaker and electromagnetic fields.

The feedback noise concert developed during the residency at Torhaus Gallery situates itself within practices of electroacoustic experimentation and material-oriented sound art. Rather than treating instruments as expressive tools, the work focuses on feedback as a self-organising system shaped by amplification, spatial conditions, and material resonance. A guitar amplifier, Bluetooth speakers, an electromagnetic microphone, and a contact microphone were configured to form an unstable sonic circuit, where sound continuously reacts to its own reproduction.

By attaching a contact microphone to the ring structure, the architectural element becomes an active resonant body, shifting the role of the performer toward that of a mediator within the system. The performance draws conceptual parallels to elemental processes such as fire, stone, and the surrounding forest landscape, not as representational imagery but as models of transformation, friction, and continuous energy exchange. In this context, the concert functions as a temporary acoustic ecology, where sound, material, and space co-produce the outcome beyond intentional control.
